Despite advances in passive-safety technology and five-star crash-test ratings for compact cars, research and experience is continuing to prove that passengers in an SUV are more likely to survive than those in a small compact car when the two collide in a high-speed crash. But it seems there is legislation coming that would make SUVs “softer” in a bid to even the odds when a cellphone-totting soccer-mom or a drunk redneck takes outs innocent bystanders with their trucks.
